This homemade blueberry ginger lemonade is so refreshing and flavorful it's addictive! The ginger is optional, but adds a zingy bite to the sweet-tart lemonade. It's excellent on its own, but adding a shot of chilled vodka or tequila certainly wouldn't hurt either 😉

How To Make
In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups of water with the granulated sugar and thinly sliced ginger. Cook over medium heat, whisking, until the sugar has thoroughly dissolved. Stir in the fresh blueberries and continue cooking, stirring often, until the blueberries have broken down. This usually takes about 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat.
Now strain the blueberry ginger mixture through a fine sieve into a bowl and let it cool completely.
Combine the blueberry ginger simple syrup with your freshly squeezed lemon juice in a pitcher. Stir until combined then let chill in the refrigerator. Serve over plenty of ice and garnish with some fresh mint, lemon slices, and fresh berries.
How to store
You can store the blueberry ginger simple syrup separately in a container in the fridge for about two weeks. This is great to keep on hand, then all you need is to make a pitcher of lemonade when you’re ready to serve.
If you want to store the blueberry ginger lemonade as a whole it will stay fresh for about a week.
This recipe is also great for freezing into ice cubes. Add them to a sparkling water for some fun and refreshing flavor as they melt.
Recipe tips
- You can substitute other sweeteners for the sugar, such as maple syrup, honey, or agave nectar. Start with ⅓ cup and taste it, adding more if desired.
- Feel free to add more ginger for a stronger flavor as the berries and lemon flavors do stand out in this mixture. Or leave out the ginger if you don’t enjoy the mildly sweet and spicy flavor.
- For a sparkling alternative, add less lemon juice and substitute the diminished liquid with your favorite sparkling water or ginger ale.
How do I serve the lemonade?
Blueberry Ginger Lemonade is refreshing as is on a hot spring or summer day. But you can also enjoy this flavor combination all year long! When the weather turns cool, warm up the blueberry ginger lemonade with some black tea for a cozy concoction.
To add a little debauchery to your libation, serve with a shot of vodka, white rum, gin, or silver tequila for an adult version of this drink.
Can I make it ahead?
You absolutely can. Really this drink should be chilled for at least an hour before serving to really let the flavors marry together. If making for a party, I suggest doubling (or even tripling) the recipe so that you have plenty. Make a day or two in advance, keep stored in the fridge, and wait until serving to include any garnishes. Lemon slices and blueberries look so pretty if serving in a large glass drink dispenser at an event, then add a sprig of fresh mint to individual glasses for a stunning presentation.
